Marked for Significance

We were not created to waste our time.

Our Creator specifically wrote every detail of our fleeting lives into His book before a single moment came to be (Psalm 139:16). Even further, His book of our days was not written in pencil. So regardless of how hard we try, intentionally or not, to scratch out His writing on the wall of our lives - or even to write our own - there is simply no eraser big enough to change His intentions. His plans stand firm forever (Psalm 33:11), so our every moment is immensely significant. Perhaps we would realize our significance if we actually resolved to read His book instead of write over it.

John Maxwell said, “The secret to your success is in your daily agenda.” God did not write a book full of worthless moments. If we regularly spend our invaluable time in habitual indolence, worthless pursuits and procrastination, then so shall be the story of our lives. Our lives have been marked for extraordinary significance. But did you choose your today to be ordinary?

Every moment matters, so whether we are in class, at work, or in the dorm, we must choose to make it count. These moments were not ordained to be absorbed in a 4-year vacation from eternal responsibility. For some of us, our only responsibility is to go to class and be a student, and many of us aren’t even doing that.  Though I have only been at the University of Mobile for two months, I recognize that we each bear the daily burden of complacency. Even in the midst of the regular battle cry of “distinctively Christian,” my spirit crawls at the thought of its validation. Christian? Most of us. But distinctive? Not really. We are mostly stagnant, apathetic, unguided, perhaps even misguided. If we expend our attention on the same pursuits as the rest of the world, then are we really different enough to make a difference?  What happens when even the “distinctively Christian” do not know where to fix their eyes? (Hebrews 12:2).

The clock is ticking. The foundations are shaking. The Spirit is moving. The King is coming-and yet we are asleep. What are we doing? What am I doing? There’s a purpose so much greater waiting to be fulfilled, and if this generation does not resolve to take it now, then who will? The last generation, for the most part, missed it. How can an entire generation miss the purpose they were created to fulfill? By waiting. If this generation is not going to be like the last (Psalm 78), then there is no more time to wait. We are marked for significance, and our eternal significance is waiting on us. We must resolve to seize the eternal power in a moment, because we have been loved enough to have been given the extraordinary.

Our generation - and those yet to come - depends on it.

Of this we must resolve: we will live by faith alone. We will walk fearlessly into the unknown, achieving much, lingering little, pressing forward with eyes fixed on the reward. We will not give up, step down, compromise or let go, for even in the midst of uncertainty, character is formed, a purpose is fulfilled and an adventure is lived along the way.  We are disciples, and we will not turn back.

“Look at the nations and watch - and be utterly amazed. For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told.” -Habakkuk 1:5

If the above statement written in His book is true, then we must wake up. We must keep watch. And we must follow. The King is ready, and if we follow, we will be utterly amazed.
